有一次，俄国皇帝出席巴黎的一个集会，人们在集会上为穷人募捐。一位美貌出众的姑娘走到皇帝跟前请求捐赠。他抽出一张二十法朗的钞票，笑着说：

“给你，小姐，为你美丽的双眼。”那姑娘点头致谢，但是仍然伸着手。“你现在要什么？”

现在，请为穷人捐一些钱。”姑娘回答。

The Emperor of Russia was once at a gathering in Pariswhen a collection was made for the poor． A very pretty Frenchgirl went to the Emperor and asked for a donation．He pulledout a twentyfranc piece and with a smile said：

“Voila，Mademoiselle，①that is for your beautiful eyes．”The girl bowed and still held out her hand．“What is it youwant now？”asked the Emperor．

“Something for the poor，now， please，”replied the girl．
